Actually, we typically don’t say that. Blame it on our Dust Bowl roots and populist ways, but this state sometimes has a hard time accepting nice things. When Gov. Kevin Stitt came into office, for instance, he said he found too many planes and too many pilots at his disposal.
What a difference eight years will make.
Over Stitt’s time as governor, some of his actions have raised eyebrows, and his only seem to keep growing along with his sourdough starter.
Now, he has asked the Oklahoma Legislature for $3 million to put toward an “upgrade” of the remaining 1992 Department of Public Safety plane that he and his family have used over the years. Supposedly, legislative leaders and other Oklahoma officials would be able to use the new plane procured over the next fiscal year — if lawmakers give final passage to the appropriation and the administration can swing a deal for a swap in that price range.
Reportedly, the state might be in the market for a lightly used Pilatus PC 12, whatever that costs. With safety and some pizzaz likely in mind as Oklahoma continues to grow its aerospace economy, I can see the point of wanting a newer plane that can make return flights from Washington without stopping for fuel.
Whatever ends up on local runways will likely be an improvement over the current state plane, but let’s hope eyebrows don’t count as “campaign bumper stickers” for this next one.
