Norman Fansville
(Mike Allen)

It’s all happening, Oklahoma!

After spending most of my life watching my fellow residents of this great state guzzle gallons of Dr. Pepper as if it were water, we’re finally getting an actual water tower full of the stuff, or something like that.

In reality, the Norman City Council approved a 10-year deal this past week with the beverage company to repaint an old water tower along Lindsey Street with the popular “Fansville” logo, which defines the fictional town obsessed with college football in the Dr. Pepper advertising universe.

The deal also includes plans to improve the surrounding area for tourists and fans to congregate for events, and given the water tower’s proximity to the football stadium, that really isn’t the worst idea.

If you’ve seen the Fansville ads that play during virtually every commercial break in the college football season, you have likely recognized former University of Oklahoma linebacker Brian Bosworth as the community’s sheriff. That might explain a bit of the reasoning behind this whole endeavor, and it feels like Cleveland County missed a chance to bring Fansville to life when deciding on a replacement for the felonious Chris Amason.

In the commercials themselves, Bosworth usually has to deal with people who act a lot like your average SEC fan — taking the sport too seriously and the fandom a bit too far — so there’s a nice fit in that respect as well. Here’s hoping the Fansville Health Clinic is being branded somewhere in Columbus, Ohio, for Dr. Eddie George.

All in all, this is a fun thing that on the surface appears to be a good deal for the City of Norman. The water tower they’re painting has been there for about 100 years, and it looks like it. When I was in school, I worked at a fast food restaurant nearby for one summer, and I would drive past the structure almost daily. I remember thinking there couldn’t have been water in it, because it would likely collapse under the weight, but I’ve read that it was in use after all.

While there won’t actually be Dr. Pepper contained within the structure after the makeover, it’s nice to see it have new life, and really it just makes me excited for the upcoming college football season.
