When it comes to squabbles over school issues, I like to imagine the best way to solve them would be a good ol’ cafeteria food fight.
I witnessed a few of them in my childhood, and even though everyone involved got in trouble, we knew where things stood in the end. The battle over who can be on this year’s ballot for state superintendent of public instruction reminded me of these meal melees.
Last month, Rep. Toni Hasenbeck (R-Elgin) challenged the candidacy of Sen. Adam Pugh (R-Edmond) before the State Election Board, which voted to retain him. Hasenbeck then filed an emergency application to the Oklahoma Supreme Court, which declined to hear the question of whether a constitutional provision makes Pugh ineligible for statewide office in the middle of his Senate term owing to pay raises passed by the Statewide Official Compensation Commission last year. Pugh’s attorney had argued that a “carve out” in the verbal motion approved by the commission made the constitutional concern moot.
With the Supreme Court choosing not to hear arguments on the matter in public, we’ll have to settle for the pair of state superintendent primary debates NonDoc is co-hosting June 2 and June 3.
With a slate of public political debates on the books this month and next, we’re primed for a fun election season. Will the race for state superintendent get as messy as slinging spaghetti and meatballs? Only time will tell.
