Well, it was fun while it lasted.
The U.S. men’s soccer team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup this past week, and the response from the general sports-watching public seemed a little muted, if I’m being honest.
Perhaps it was an outcome we all expected, or maybe it was simply that it happened to occur on a Monday. But in any case, the excitement level for the event has dropped a bit now that all three host countries are out of it.
As a somewhat typical American sports fan, I enjoy watching the World Cup to an extent. The rules are simple — maybe not as simple as they used to be with all the reviews — and given that each team is representing a country, it isn’t especially difficult to understand the storylines.
However, my interest wanes once I don’t have a “hometown” team to root for, which is where we find ourselves currently even as the end of the tourney approaches with an exceptionally high level of play out there on the pitch.
Will I watch the final? The answer is probably, “Yes,” considering it’s the middle of summer and there really isn’t much else going on in the world of sports. But, I’m not likely to go out and celebrate at my nearest French restaurant if Kylian Mbappé scores a game winner in the 89th minute.
I suppose we’ll try this again in four years, so it’s never too early to scout your next opponent. The semifinal matchups are set for Tuesday (France v. Spain) and Wednesday (Argentina v. England), so there’s plenty of drama and good competition left to watch.
